The Real Cause of Most Dry Eye
Healthy tears need a thin layer of oil to keep them from evaporating. That oil comes from tiny glands in your eyelids called meibomian glands. When those glands become blocked or inflamed — a condition called Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) — tears evaporate too quickly and your eyes are left dry, irritated, and overworked. The vast majority of dry eye cases involve MGD.
Here's the part that matters most: MGD is progressive. Glands that stay blocked can shrink and stop working permanently. Eye drops can soothe the surface for a few minutes, but they can't reopen a blocked gland. Treatment can — and the earlier, the better.
